Naturally, people down here in good ol’ Texas are offended. Because the solstice totally isn’t a naturally-occurring phenomenon. It’s really just an invention by pagans as an excuse to light fires and have blood orgies. Obviously.

June 16, 1963: Valentina Tereshkova becomes the first woman in space.

Two years after Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space, fellow cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, launched on the Vostok 6 spaceflight, became the first woman to do so. Prior to her recruitment as a cosmonaut, Tereshkova was an amateur parachutist, the daughter of a tractor driver and a textile worker (if anything, her humble background made her an even more qualified candidate to represent the women of the Soviet space program).

Tereshkova was relatively young when she ventured into space; at twenty-six, she was exactly ten years younger than the Mercury Seven’s youngest astronaut, Gordon Cooper. After several months of intensive and secretive training, she was nominated and confirmed by Nikita Khrushchev himself to become the first woman in space, and she did so flawlessly on June 16, 1963. She remained in orbit for nearly three days, performing the same tasks as her male counterparts (collecting photographic information, manning her craft), before returning to Earth on June 19. Tereshkova made no further spaceflights after her milestone first, and nearly two decades passed before the Soviet Union ever launched another woman into space. Despite the brevity of her space career, she was not forgotten in her country and received several awards and decorations for her accomplishments - almost immediately after her successful return from space, Tereshkova received the title of “Hero of the Soviet Union”, which was awarded for “heroic feats in service to the Soviet state and society”.

Orion B Molecular Cloud

The Horsehead Nebula is one of the most iconic images in the night sky. A favourite amongst astronomers, both amateur and professional, it is a cloud of dust in the which appears to take the shape of a horse’s head.

In visible light, this cloud appears dark, silhouetted against the bright glow from background gas, but in the far-infared light seen by Herschel the horse’s head glows with its own light, seen towards the right of the image above.

The full image shows the surrounding region, complete with a complex network of clouds and filaments. The glowing cloud behind the horse’s head (called IC 434) is illumiated by the star Alnitak, the left-most member of Orion’s famous belt.

Also nearby is the Flame Nebula (also called NGC 2024), a cloud in which stars are forming, and which glows brightly in the images from Herschel. Thes clouds glow in visible light because they reflect the light from nearby stars.

The Horsehead Nebula and the Flame Nebula are all part of one massive region called the “Orion B Molecular Cloud”. To the left of the full image are stellar cocoons in which massive stars are forming, such as M78 (also known as NGC 2068). Threading away from both regions are dense filaments of gas and dust. The orange and yellow clumps represent the earliest stages of star formation, with green and blue regions representing warmer dust heated by stars that have already formed.

As of this writing, Voyager I is over 18,000,000,000 km away from Earth - for comparison, that’s about the distance one would travel if one went from California to New York about four million times.

When Voyager I was initially launched, it was only expected to survive for four years - it’s been active for over 35 years.

Currently, the craft is travelling in a region of space that may well be beyond our solar system - although this is unclear at the moment.
